DOUBLE / VERTICAL @ DAIMON, Gatineau, QC
February 17, 2016
For this new piece we programmed a timer in Max that opens 7 envelopes of time for us to improvise inside. The sections range from 2 minutes to 6 minutes in length. The computer that generates the visual transforms is networked with our laptops, so the visual fades follow the audio envelopes as they open and close.
The objects in the visual field float in a zero-gravity space, colliding and spinning off to re-group in ephemeral compositions over two vertical colour fields that are constantly changing.
Laura’s setup is live sampling of voice and violin, and QuNeo touch control of samples from our studio improvisations. Ian’s setup is Ebow guitar/contact pickup, feedback matrix/voice input, custom harmonizer in Max/MSP using the Harry Partch 43 note microtonal scale.
Recorded live at NAISA Toronto June 10, 2013, excerpt from final section of the three-hour performance broadcast. Live sampling/transforms of voice, objects and modified guitar.
Instrumentation:
Laura Kavanaugh, laptop (custom software for live sampling), voice, amplified objects,
Ian Birse, modified guitar, live sampling.
