Instant Places are intermedia works we create in response to particular geographies and cultures, using software instruments we design. In our work we focus on the moment of creation, combining improvised actions in performance with sound and image sequences generated in real time.
An Instant Places project is an improvisation from start to finish, in the sense that everything that happens from inception to exhibition has potential significance that we are challenged to recognize. In our work the vital element is time: time to get lost in a new city with cameras and sound recorders, time for generated audiovisual events to unfold at a human pace, evoking the rhythms of walking and breathing. We want the consciousness of each viewer to be integral to the creation of the work, as they engage with a stream of moving images and sounds that is unique to the moment of their experience.
Instant Places projects have been realized from our experience of day-to-day life in places as diverse as a West Australian village, a farming town in Saskatchewan, and urban centres such as Toronto, Kassel, Tokyo, and Buenos Aires.
