Biography

Laura Kavanaugh and Ian Birse have been developing hybrids of electronic art and improvised performance since the early 1990's. Since 2000 they have focused on creating intermedia works in response to particular geographies and cultures using software tools they design.

They have realized Instant Places projects in places as diverse as a West Australian village, a farming town in Saskatchewan, and urban centres such as Toronto, Kassel, Tokyo, and Buenos Aires.

Commissioned works include Instant Places: Canada Code (2010 Games, Vancouver), Bright Moments (City of Kitchener), Operator, a noise opera (Western Front, Vancouver), and HEAD! SMASHED! IN! BUFFALO! JUMP! (New Adventures in Sound Art, Toronto).

Kavanaugh and Birse have created installation/performance works for venues across Europe, Canada, Australia, and Japan, Chicago and New York in the United States and Buenos Aires/Montevideo in South America.
