inside/out
surround audio composition/performance::::: collaboration with john butcher

frakture festival.......liverpool.....october 6 2001

inside/out explored the possibilities of a multi channel sound environment for improvised music....john worked with saxophone sounds arrived at by micing different points in the air column.....the guitar sounds were made using a combination of contact and magnetic pickups that heard different harmonics, each pickup run through a separate gate to alter the attack/decay

four guitar compositions were sent to john, who recorded saxophone responses......these sounds became samples to be manipulated using real time pitch shifting software (*) and various outboard effects....improvisations which were edited and spatialized for multi channel playback at darren copeland's studio on toronto island

part 1 began with an eight minute section of the tape composition followed by free improvising....part 2 consisted of improvisations with tape followed by free playing
