audio installation and performance:::::guelph jazz festival / ed video::::september 8—14 2001
walking seems to be a good way to notice things you don't notice in a car.....sounds, small objects that have been lost or thrown away, bits of conversation.....the contact project is part of an ongoing series in which an installation is made from scratch using local materials, with the work being done in the installation space in a few days

the idea was to arrive a few days early for the festival and gather sound material using contact pickups on my feet, edit the sounds into an installation, then do a performance during the festival...the creaky stairs leading up to the installation/performance space were an interesting feature of the sonic landscape..... after trying contact pickups i found that soundman in ear mics taped to my feet sounded creakier....... and there was a breaker box in the space that had a beautiful hum......the edited sounds were burned to three cds along with silent tracks...the cd players in random mode fed three speakers

for the performance i recorded the staircase climb and transferred the sounds to powerbook while the audience chatted.....loops of audience conversation and climbing feet were transformed as mixer feedback slowly built
